How do you do it? I see Gondee and others doing it, but I can't get mine to work...

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you making a GIF, uploading one, or setting one as your avatar?

well, if you wanna use a GIF as an avatar you have to go to the image website and go to "copy shortcut" or copy however it is on the browser you're using

so here's my avatar link: http://i2.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/600/791/0b8.gif

you go to the insert image url on the avatar upload
this would be the final result:

for the sake of demonstration i'm putting under and image tag, but it will be resized to the 150px by 150px image automatically. hope this sorta makes sense

The problem now is that I get the response:

The submitted avatar is 260 pixels wide and 195 pixels high. Avatars must be at least 20 pixels wide and 20 pixels high, but no larger than 150 pixels wide and 150 pixels high.

I don't know how to crop it, and when I specify it as 150 x 150, it uploads but shows no Gif...

ok i'll show you the way i did with some handy photos
Step 1: Find original image location (this is for uploading through the internet)


Step 2: Copy the image shortcut


Step 3: Paste said link into the 'Link off Site' bar provided


now it should prompt you to return to user control panel and show you the updated avatar, hope this explains better

On top of size requirements (ie. 150x150px limit you ran into above), there is also a file-size limit with Avatars and signatures. 125-150K is the largest it should be. If you post larger, I will PM you and ask you to shrink or remove it.

and Gondee, how did you make that Gif within 150Kbs? Mine is 159 (sorry about that), and It isn't the size nor the number of frames...

I took it in to photoshop and a) reduced the size to about 100x100 and then B) reduced the colors from 256 to like 24. Then removed the dithering. The only reason it looks good is because it's in motion.
