Have an argument one night with the closest person to you in the world outside of your blood relatives (so they are a best friend, boyfriend, fiance, wife, w/e) only to find them in the morning on top of you with a knife and you struggle as they attempt to murder you. But you manage to take the knife off them in the struggle just as someone came in from the commotion and pulled them away from you. The next chance you get to see them is in prison. They confessed and felt regret over the situation. They got 3 years or something like that, they want you back. You come away with just scars (mainly on your neck and hand where you grabbed the knife) and deep psycological trauma. Now live your life.

or

The family member who you are closest to in the world suddenly and randomly shuts you out. You made a mistake. You make attempts to talk to them, but you're just ignored. You know you made a mistake, although you didn't think it was deserving of this. You get indirect hints that they hate you. You blame yourself, but they are treating you HARSH. You have even tried apologising and saying you were wrong. Still the same. You can see them at any time, it's just that when you do they will cold shoulder / ignore you. Expect to always feel uncomfortable and awkward in their company, at least in the immediate future. 3 years later it's still the same. I can only speculate that it had become so hurtful that you would fear to see them, yet you still have the same 'closest person to me in my family' feeling about them you ever had when you think of them. There is the potential for resolve in the future. Now live your life.

@TaysteChampion 2nd option, I'll go into more detail in a PM but basically over the past year I've been through that one, and it's shown me that my friends are so much more reliable and so much more important to me then my family is at this point in my life.
